The Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-17) - 8/11/24

INTRO

  • Continued teaching on the Kingdom (A Parable on entering the Kingdom)

  • Those that receive and enter… those that do not

  • A great lesson on humility and seeing grace for what it truly is

  • Some view themselves a little to highly… others understand their standing before God.

The Audience – v. 9

  • People that trusted in themselves (religious people)

  • Self-righteous treated others with contempt

  • Consider the two greatest commandments Matthew 22:36-40

The Parable – vv. 10-13

Pharisee

  • No understanding of the Gospel

    • Depravity, Judgment, Grace

  • HIS MORALITY

  • HIS WORSHIP

  • Me, Me, Me

Tax Collector

  • He got it!

  • He knew who He was. What Christ did. His life now.

  • Ashamed of His sin.

  • Knew where mercy was found

  • He went down to his house justified

The Lesson – v. 14-17

  • He who exalts himself will be humbled, he who humbles himself will be exalted.

  • THE GOSPEL

  • See you for who you are

  • See Jesus for who He is

A real life example – vv. 15-17

  • Children (in the background in society)

  • Yet, parents are bringing them to Christ (For a blessing?)

  • Let them come…such belong to the Kingdom of God

  • WE MUST RECEIVE LIKE CHILDREN

    • Humility

    • Faith

    • Dependence (initially, on-going)

      • HIS GRACE

      • NOT SELF (Parable)

  • Who Paul was

  • Who He is

  • His life moving forward
