INTRO
A resurrection appearance
An explanation of the empty tomb.
The Gospel opening the eyes of the heart and mind
On the Road to Emmaus (Searching for answers)
Cleopas and his companion are on the road to Emmaus.
Possibly returning home from the Passover proceedings.
They were probably part of the people that were following Jesus with the disciples during his triumphal entry.
Talking and discussing the resurrection. The empty tomb.
Where is Jesus? What has happened? (SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS)
The Arrival of Jesus (The sharing of the truth)
A supernatural appearance
They were kept from recognizing Him v. 16
They knew him, but did not recognize him.
This reveals the heart of the issue… a physical Jesus or a spiritual Jesus.
And beginning with Scripture.
Jesus taught/walked them through the OT prophesies about the Messiah.

THEIR EYES WERE OPEN
They went and told the others. JESUS IS ALIVE.
THE POWER AND TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL Romans 1:16
Romans 10:13-17. One must either read the gospel message for oneself or hear it from another person.
One must call upon the Lord to be saved
One can only call upon Him if they believe in Him
One cannot believe in Him unless they hear the Gospel
One cannot hear the Gospel unless someone tells them
Saving faith comes by an individual that has responded in repentance and faith to the proclamation/presentation of the Gospel.
The Necessity of Scripture means that the Bible is necessary for knowledge of the gospel, for maintaining spiritual life, and for certain knowledge of God’s will, but is not necessary for knowing that God exists or for knowing something about God’s character and moral laws. (Wayne Grudem)Necessity is an attribute of Scripture whereby it is essential for knowing the way of salvation, for progressing in holiness, and for discerning in God’s will. (Gregg Allison)
What about those who haven’t heard the gospel? – John 14:6
Inclusivism is wrong
It is by Jesus death that one is saved, but one does not have to specifically have heard the Gospel to be saved. That general revelation is enough.
Pluralism is wrong
Many paths to God. All religions are right.
Universalism is wrong
All will be saved. Regardless of anything.
Postmodern thought (no absolutes)
We can determine truth on our own
Very low few of Scripture
Example… After unbelievers die, they will be given another opportunity (or a first opportunity) to trust in Christ
2 Timothy 2:15 - Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (ESV)
