The Heart of Unbelief (Luke 16:14-18) - 6/23/24

INTRO

  • Entire section is on stewardship

  • Faithful stewards with the Truth/Gospel

  • The Pharisee gives us a picture of an unfaithful steward

  • They denied the hope found only in Christ

They Love Something More Than Jesus– v. 14

  • They loved their money

  • Ridiculed the words of Christ

  • Christ’s teachings should have convicted and encouraged

Their Heart Condemns Them – v. 15

They Depend on Works and Not Grace – vv. 16-17

All things were pointing to this day

  • The law -Genesis to Deuteronomy

  • Prophets – rest of OT

  • Jesus is arguing that what he brings represents the fulfillment of the promise and hope of the Law, to bring righteousness to God’s people.[1]

Romans 7:4-6 [4] Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. [5] For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. [6] But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. (ESV)

Those that hear and believe…respond

  • Everyone forces his way in

  • Enthusiastic to enter this NEW way (Grace!!!!)

The new magnifies the old

  • Matthew 5:7 – not abolish but fulfill

  • Matthew 22:37 – love God…Love others.

  • ALL FULFILLED IN CHRIST

  • We adhere to the ethics and values of the law and prophets

  • Yet, we are not under the Old Covenant requirements

The great moral principles of the law, the eternal truths contained in the law’s types and symbols, and the promises recorded by the prophets all remain in force and are not abrogated by the kingdom message.[2]

God’s character does not change, and therefore his demand for holiness, purity, honesty, and integrity does not change. God still wants from us what he has always wanted: a life that is totally dedicated to his glory[3]

FOR US TODAY…LISTEN FOR THE I (Little fruit… all talk)

  • I believe in Jesus

  • I’m a good person

  • I “did” something (baptized, joined the church)
