Jonah is not about a fish or Jonah or Nineveh…Jonah is a book about GOD.
Chapter 4 brings it all to light.
Chap 1 – You cannot run from God (Patience and Providence)
Chap 2 – The forgiveness of God (God’s Pardon)
Chap 3 – The redemptive purpose of God (God’s Propitiation)
Chap 4 – The gracious comfort of God (God’s pity)
Jonah’s Heart – vv. 1-4
Jonah prays a second time
He prayed his best prayer in the worst spot
He prayed his worst prayer in the best spot
Broken heart…Save me
Angry heart…Kill me
Jonah obeyed, but he did so with the wrong heart. Now we see what the main was.
Their repentance
God’s forgiveness
(YET GOD FORGAVE HIM)
Heart Issue
1 Samuel 16:7 – But the Lord looks on the heart.
1 Corinthians 4:5 – who will disclose the purposes of the heart.
Matthew 15:19 – Out of the hearts comes…..these are what defile a person
Ephesians 6:6-7 – obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to moan.
God’s heart – vv. 5-11
v. 2 – Gracious, Merciful, Slow to Anger, Abounding in Steadfast Love, Relenting from Disaster
God appointed
Fish, the vine, the worm, the wind
God provided the plant
God provides all comforts of life
God provided the worm
Now we can see the real heart of Jonah. (Sent a fish now God sends a worm)
Without the plant the only relief was in the city…hard headed!!
Are you right to be angry about the vine? I AM
You Pity the plant. I pity Nineveh
The hypocrisy of Jonah.
How about our heart?
