How Do We Respond to Jesus? (Luke 7:36-50) - 7/9/23

INTRO

  • 2 People, 2 Reactions. 2 Hearts.

  • Coming to Jesus as Savior and Lord

The setting – vv. 36-39

  • Pharisee invited Jesus to come to his house

  • Sinner approaches Jesus

    • Humility

    • Great cost

  • Pharisee saw Jesus as a religious person

  • The women saw Jesus as her Savior

The Pharisee was appalled that Jesus allowed this women in her presence…. She was a sinner. Jesus knowing His heart responded. A parable on forgiveness – vv. 40-43

  • Money lender and debtors

  • Cancellation of debt. 500 and 50

When we understand the seriousness of our sin, we see Jesus Christ in a much different way

Therefore, we must get the Gospel right.


The Gospel


God is the sovereign creator and worthy of all praise.

  • His greatness, goodness, and glory.

  • He is holy, righteous, loving, and just.

  • Gen. 1:1-“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

  • Rev. 4:8-“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”

  • Rev. 4:11 –“Worthy are You , our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they exist and were created.”

  • Matt. 4:10 – “You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only you shall serve.”

  • Matt. 22:37-“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

Man is separated from God because of our sin.

  • Man is separated from God.

  • He is holy and we are sinful. (Adam and Eve. The fall.)

  • Rom. 3:23-“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

  • Rom. 6:23-“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  • Eph. 2:1 –“You were dead in your trespasses and sin.”

Christ’s redemptive work

  • His life, death, burial, and resurrection is God’s only provision for the forgiveness of our sin and the appeasement of God’s wrath against him.

  • John 3:16-“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

  • Rom. 5:8-“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

  • Eph. 2:8-9 “For by GRACE you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Our Response

  • We must respond to this good news!

  • We must repent of our sin, place our faith and trust in Christ, and give our life over to Him

  • John 14:6-“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

  • John 1:12-“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”

  • 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
