INTRO

  • For us… Resurrection Sunday was last week…now what?

  • Matthew opens with the birth… then the resurrection, but that is not the end

  • Jesus has been preparing the disciples all through the Gospels for this very moment.

    • He lived

    • He died

    • He rose again

    • He gives the GREAT COMMISSION

His Invitation – vv. 16-17

  • Go to Galilee… and you will see me. v. 10

  • The risen Savior is giving His parting words to His disciples

  • It has been 40 days since His resurrection

  • Some worshiped (Understood exactly who He was)

  • Some doubted (believed but a little hesitant)

His Authority – v. 18

  • All authority

  • From humiliation to exaltation Phil 2:1-11

  • In the Gospels he healed, raised the dead, walked on water…. This was just a glimpse of who He is.

His Mandate – vv. 19-20a

Make Disciples (the imperative)

  • A saved person learning to live under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

  • Notice what the imperative is not

    • Not preaching

    • Not making converts

    • Not getting decisions

  • Matt 4:19 – Fisher of men

  • Matt 28:19 – Discipler of all men (all nations)

  • Consider the “callings”… to preach, teach or evangelize

  • Yet, we are all called to make disciples.

How is disciple making accomplished?

By Going – v. 19

  • Going, As you are going

  • AS YOU ARE GOING – FOLLOWING JESUS

By Baptizing – v.19

  • Identifying with Christ and His Church

  • Picture of the changed life… from old to new

  • A physical and public statement of one’s faith

  • Scripture gives no indication there such thing as an unbaptized believer

  • Notice, it is after one professes their faith in Christ

By Teaching – v. 19

  • To observe

    • Belief, Trust, Action =Obedience

  • All I have commanded you

    • The words of Christ (the Word of God)

    • The words of the Apostles (The Word of God)

    • The Bible (The Word of God)

His Presence – v. 20b

  • I am with you always

  • Matt. 1:23 – Immanuel – GOD WITH US

  • The power of the mission

    • WE ARE NEVER ALONE

    • IT IS NOT OUR MESSAGE OR MISSION

    • WE SERVE HIM

    • WE ARE HIS AMBASSADOR

CONCLUSION

We have the mission

  • We have the power – All authority

  • We have the location – All the nations

  • We have the message – All the Words

  • We have the duration – All our days (end of the age)
