Our current Family Devotional Guide series is an exploration of the 119th psalm. This lengthy psalm is an acrostic psalm broken up into 22 stanzas, and we are covering one stanza each week. We pray this psalm, which focuses on the Word of God itself, will strengthen you in your walk with the Lord!
Day 1
Scripture: Psalm 119:145-146
Discussion: How does the psalmist cry? What does the intensity of his prayer tell us about his need of (and desire for) salvation? Why does the psalmist seek salvation from God? What is his motive in praying that God would save him? For the answer, consider the second half of verse 146. Overall, what is the psalmist’s priority? Hint: Consider the promises he makes in vv. 145-146.

Day 2
Scripture: Psalm 119:147-149
Discussion: When does the psalmist arise and call for help? What does this tell us about the psalmist’s desire to make sure God is first in his life? How might we better prioritize the Lord in our own lives? What changes might we make to ensure that we are seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness? Why does the psalmist rise early in verse 148? How might we use our time better? Discuss what the psalmist means by this phrase: “O Lord, according to your justice give me life” (verse 149).
Song: “Step by Step” by David (Beaker) Strasser
Day 3
Scripture: Psalm 119:150-152
Discussion: Why were the evildoers drawing near to the psalmist? Discuss possible motives they might have had. The psalmist knew that even though the evildoers were drawing near (presumably surrounding him to harm him), the Lord was also near (v. 151). Discuss how the Lord preserves His people. What other passages speak of God protecting us from harm? When harm does happen to God’s people (consider martyrdom), how does God’s abiding presence give us strength and peace?
