This week’s Family Devotional Guide is based on our Scripture reading from Sunday, Matthew 17:1-8.
DAY 1:
Scripture: Matthew 17:1-2
Discussion: Very little background is given for the account of the Transfiguration, but it would be worthwhile to spend some time discussing some questions and digging deeper into this event. One of the big questions concerns the audience for the Transfiguration: why do you think Jesus only took Peter, James and John? Why did you think Jesus chose not to take the other disciples with Him? What do you think the purpose was for the Transfiguration? Discuss other Scripture passages that might point to reasons Jesus might have had for displaying His glory before them right then and there.

DAY 2:
Scripture: Matthew 17:3-4
Discussion: Just as with the question surrounding why Jesus handpicked Peter, James, and John to appear, Scripture does not spell out the reasons why Moses and Elijah appeared. Why do you think that they are the two that appeared? What might this signify about Jesus’ connection to the Old Testament? Bear in mind that the Old Testament is often summarized by the phrase “the Law and the Prophets,” and Moses and Elijah are major representatives of each category.

DAY 3:
Scripture: Matthew 17:5-8
Discussion: The high point of the Transfiguration is the recognition of Jesus by God the Father who spoke from a cloud, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him” (v. 5). Discuss the significance of “Son” as used to describe Jesus. Discuss the importance of the fact that God the Father is pleased with Jesus, His Son. Why is God the Father pleased with Jesus? We rarely read of God the Father speaking in the New Testament. During what other milestone in Jesus’ earthly life do we read of His Father speaking to Him with an audience present? What did the Father say?
