Our current Family Devotional Guide series is an exploration of the 119th psalm. This lengthy psalm is an acrostic psalm broken up into 22 stanzas, and we are covering one stanza each week. We pray this psalm, which focuses on the Word of God itself, will strengthen you in your walk with the Lord!
Day 1
Scripture: Psalm 119:137-138
Discussion: What does righteous/righteousness mean? Discuss the ways that the Lord is righteous and the ways his rules (i.e. law) are righteous. What does it mean that the Lord has “appointed your testimonies in righteousness and in all faithfulness?” How are righteousness and faithfulness similar? How are they different? Why is it important that God’s testimonies contained in Scripture are righteous and faithful?
Song: “Cornerstone” by William B. Bradbury, Edward Mote, Eric Lijero, Jonas Myrin, & Reuben Morgan
Day 2
Scripture: Psalm 119:139-141
Discussion: Why does zeal consume the psalmist? How does Jesus Christ display that righteous zeal? While the psalmist is grieved over those who forget the word of God, what is the psalmist’s relationship to the Bible? How does being “small and despised” connect to the promise not to forget God’s precepts? Why might persecution, trials or other difficulties cause us to waver in remembering the Word of the Lord?
Song: “Knowing You” by Graham Kendrick
Day 3
Scripture: Psalm 119:142-144
Discussion: Why is it significant that the Lord’s “righteousness is righteous forever?” How does God’s righteousness differ from human righteousness? How is God’s law superior to the laws of man? How does God’s word bring delight when we face trouble and anguish? Finally, discuss the importance of the psalmist’s prayer at the end of verse 144: “give me understanding that I may live.”
