Family Devotional Guide - 8/18/24

Our current Family Devotional Guide series is an exploration of the 119th psalm.  This lengthy psalm is an acrostic psalm broken up into 22 stanzas, and we are covering one stanza each week. We pray this psalm, which focuses on the Word of God itself, will strengthen you in your walk with the Lord!

Day 1

  • Scripture: Psalm 119:121-123

  • Discussion: What does the psalmist assert about his personal holiness (v. 121)? How might doing “what is just and right” connect to the psalmist’s request not to be left to his “oppressors?” The psalmist then asks once again for help against those who oppress him. What might the psalmist be referring to as a “pledge of good?” What does the psalmist long for? Would you say that you long for God’s salvation and to see “the fulfillment of [His] righteous promise?”

  • Song: “Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)” by Chris Tomlin

Day 2

  • Scripture: Psalm 119:124-125

  • Discussion: How does the psalmist want the Lord to deal with him? What gives the psalmist the boldness to ask such a request? What does the psalmist want the Lord to teach him, and what does this tell us about the psalmist’s overall goal in life? Describe the status in which the psalmist views himself (v. 125). What does this tell us about the psalmist’s humility? Spend some time praying, “Give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies!”

  • Song: “Indescribable” by Jesse Reeves & Laura Story

Day 3

  • Scripture: Psalm 119:126-128

  • Discussion: Why does the psalmist want the Lord to act? What does this tell us about the psalmist’s respect for God’s law? Describe how the world today (both Christians and non-Christians) views the word of God. How can we, as Christians, cultivate a greater concern for God’s law and the importance of keeping God’s law? What does verse 127 tell us about the value the psalmist places on God’s word? Pray that the Lord would help you cherish His word above the greatest riches this world has to offer. Ask the Lord to help you “hate every false way.”

  • Song: “Be Thou My Vision” by Eleanor H. Hull & Mary E. Byrne
