Our current Family Devotional Guide series is an exploration of the 119th psalm. This lengthy psalm is an acrostic psalm broken up into 22 stanzas, and we are covering one stanza each week. We pray this psalm, which focuses on the Word of God itself, will strengthen you in your walk with the Lord!
Day 1
Scripture: Psalm 119:81-82
Discussion: In this portion of Psalm 119, the psalmist declares that his “soul longs for your salvation” and his “eyes long for your promise.” How might the soul long for salvation? How might eyes “long for” God’s promises? What does this tell us about the importance of setting our hopes in God alone? Discuss the confidence of the psalmist in declaring, “I hope in your word”(v. 81b). Are there areas of your life in which your hope is not fully in the Lord? Are you facing the kind of discouragement the psalmist spoke of as he cried out, “When will you comfort me?” Spend some time praying for those circumstances for which you need God to comfort you.

Day 2
Scripture: Psalm 119:83-85
Discussion: To what does the psalmist compare himself in verse 83? Why is it important to continue trusting in the Lord even when facing trouble? What enables us to be able to continue enduring? How does God’s ability to judge evildoers factor into our ability to endure hardship (cf. verse 84)? In what ways might the insolent “have dug pitfalls”? What does the fact that “they do not live according to your law” impact why they oppose the psalmist?

Day 3
Scripture: Psalm 119:86-88
Discussion: The psalmist declares that God’s “commandments are sure” and then states that the evildoers were persecuting him with falsehood. How might the psalmist’s confidence in God’s commandments connect with the fact that he was facing persecution (and crying out to the Lord for help)? Why is it important to keep trusting in the Lord’s precepts when facing difficulty? What was the psalmist’s motivation in asking the Lord to give him life? (Hint: consider the last half of verse 88.)
