This week’s Family Devotional Guide is based on Psalm 146, our Scripture reading for Sunday, July 10.
Day 1
Scripture Reading: Psalm 146:1-2
Discussion: This section opens with a command. While the first “Praise the Lord” could be the psalmist exhorting God’s people, the second command is mostly likely the psalmist commanding himself, “Praise the Lord, O my soul!” What does this tell us of the need to worship, as well as is importance? Discuss the psalmist’s intention to praise God as long as the psalmist lives. What lessons do we learn from this commitment?

Day 2
Scripture Reading: Psalm 146:3-4
Discussion: In this section, the psalmist points his attention to earthly leaders and instructs us not to put trust in princes. Praise (v. 1-2) and trust (v. 3) are closely connected. As we worship the Lord, we declare our trust in Him, whether explicitly or implicitly. So, how does worshiping God inform how we should respond to other leaders? Discuss the issue of ultimate allegiance in the Christian life.

Day 3
Scripture Reading: Psalm 146:5-10
Discussion: The psalmist states in verse five that a person is blessed when God is his help (in other words, when the Lord is His God and source of strength). Discuss why the man who relies on the Lord and His strength is truly blessed. Spend some time discussing vv. 6-9, focusing on all the things the Lord does. How does this section of the psalm point us to Jesus? Finally, spend some time thanking the Lord for His rule and reign and praise Him for the fact that His kingdom will never end!
