Family Devotional Guide - 6/16/24

Our current Family Devotional Guide series is an exploration of the 119th psalm.  This lengthy psalm is an acrostic psalm broken up into 22 stanzas, and we are covering one stanza each week. We pray this psalm, which focuses on the Word of God itself, will strengthen you in your walk with the Lord!

Day 1

  • Scripture: Psalm 119:49-50

  • Discussion: The psalmist asks the Lord to remember the promises that God had made to him. What might those promises be? What Scripture references have been a source of hope and encouragement to you? Spend some time discussing verses that give you strength to persevere in the faith. What is the psalmist’s comfort in affliction? How might the Lord use pain and suffering in our lives for a greater purpose?

  • Song: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” by Thomas O. Chisholm & William M. Runyan

Day 2

  • Scripture: Psalm 119:51-53

  • Discussion: The psalmist opens this section by mentioning “the insolent.” What characterizes the insolent? How are the insolent different from believers? Once again, the psalmist mentions the comfort that he receives from the word of the Lord. What are some other sources of false “comfort” that we might turn to? Why is it important to make sure that our comfort comes from the Lord and not worldly things? The psalmist still has the insolent in mind as he describes the “hot indignation” that seizes him “because of the wicked.” What characterizes the wicked (see the end of v. 53)? What does this tell us about one of the primary characteristics of the wicked?

  • Song: “Yet Not I but through Christ in Me” by Jonny Robinson, Michael Farren & Rich Thompson

Day 3

  • Scripture: Psalm 119:54-56

  • Discussion: What might be the “house of my sojourning” that the psalmist mentions? The psalmist states that “your statutes have been my songs.” The psalmist is most likely referencing the psalms, but he could also be referring to other songs of Scripture verses set to music. Discuss the importance of biblical worship. Why is it important to the psalmist to consider the Lord during nighttime hours? Finally, what is the blessing that the psalmist references? What does this tell us about the importance of God’s word?

  • Song: “Psalm 150 (Praise the Lord)” by Matt Boswell & Matt Papa
