Family Devotional Guide - 5/28/23

This week’s Family Devotional Guide is taken from our sermon passage for Sunday, Luke 6:43-45.

DAY 1

  • Scripture: Luke 6:43-44

  • Discussion: As will be shown more fully in verse 45, Jesus’ mention of fruit here refers to the outcome of our lives (behavior, attitudes, actions, etc.). What does this tell us about the work of the Holy Spirit and the reality of sin? Spend some time discussing what you would tell a professing believer who claims to know the Lord Jesus Christ, but their life shows that they do not submit to Christ’s Lordship. How might you determine whether that person is a wayward believer or is lost and in need of salvation?

  • Song: “His Mercy Is More” by Matt Boswell & Matt Papa

DAY 2

  • Scripture: Luke 6:45a

  • Discussion: What is the source of godly or ungodly behavior? Specifically, this passage refers to the “good treasure” or “evil treasure” in individuals’ hearts. What does Jesus mean by those phrases? What is the source of a changed heart? What passages in the Old Testament speak to the Lord’s ability to change hearts?

  • Song: “Change My Heart, Oh God” by Eddie Espinosa

DAY 3

  • Scripture: Luke 6:45b

  • Discussion: Verse 45 ends with the phrase “for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” What is Jesus telling us about the human heart? Spend some time confessing any known sins in your life. Jesus specifically mentions speech in this verse, so spend some time asking the Lord to help you guard your tongue so that you might be careful to speak only the things that would please the Lord. Pray especially that the Lord would help you order your life according to the words that God has spoken to us in His Word.

  • Song: “Speak, O Lord” by Keith Getty & Stuart Townend
