This week’s Family Devotional Guide is based on our Scripture reading from Sunday, Mark 9:33-37.
DAY 1:
Scripture: Mark 9:33-34
Discussion: These two verses show us the behind-the-scenes interaction of the disciples. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Mark wrote this passage that reveals the pride of these leaders in Jesus’ earthly ministry. What does this tell us about the temptation to be prideful? How can we guard against pride? Discuss a public figure such as a politician, athlete or musician who had a notorious downfall in the public eye. How might pride have led to that downfall and how might they have avoided it (cf. Proverbs 16:18)?
Song: “Speak, O Lord” by Keith Getty & Stuart Townend
DAY 2:
Scripture: Mark 9:35
Discussion: What is the significance of being “first?” For those who desire constantly to be “number one,” what does such a desire reveal about the heart? Jesus instructed them to prioritize servanthood and the virtue of being “last.” How might we reorient our desires to consistently answer the Lord’s call to be a servant? What might we have to change about our lives to live out the call to be a faithful servant of the Lord?
Song: “Take My Life” by Frances Ridley Havergal, Henri A.C. Malan, Chris Tomlin & Louie Giglio
DAY 3:
Scripture: Mark 9:36-37
Discussion: What point is Jesus making about children in verse 37? What does it mean to receive children? What word(s) might you use to paraphrase the idea of receiving children? Discuss what that looks like on a practical level. What is Jesus indicating by saying that receiving Him means receiving the Father? What does this tell us about the divinity of Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity?
Song: “Show Us Christ” by Bob Kauflin & Doug Plank
