This week’s Family Devotional Guide is based on our Scripture reading from Sunday, Colossians 1:15-20.
DAY 1:
Scripture: Colossians 1:15-17
Discussion: How is Jesus Christ “the image of the invisible God” and the “firstborn of all creation?” What does this tell us about Jesus’ nature and status? Discuss how Jesus Christ is the instrument of creation (cf. John 1:3). How does Jesus’ role in creating all things connect with His authority over all things? What does is mean that “all things hold together” in Him? Spend some time in prayer and praise the Lord for His might, power, and authority, and thank Him for His gracious rule over all things.
Song: “Center” by Charlie Hall & Matt Redman
DAY 2:
Scripture: Colossians 1:18a; Ephesians 1:22-23
Discussion: Paul wrote in Colossians 1:18 that Christ is “head of the body, the church.” He also wrote about this theological concept in Ephesians 1:22-23 by referring to Jesus as being “head over all things to the church, which is his body.” What are the practical implications that flow from the universal church (the body of believers all over the world) being considered Christ’s very own body? How should our churches operate with this in mind? How might our church life be different if we as individuals more highly respected the Lord Jesus Christ who rules over Tabernacle Baptist Church? How might this impact us in the following areas: using our spiritual gifts, obeying the Bible, and being more faithful to regularly attend worship services?
Song: “The Church’s One Foundation” by Samuel J. Stone & Samuel S. Wesley
DAY 3:
Scripture: Colossians 1:18b-20
Discussion: What does it mean that Jesus is the “firstborn from the dead”? How might you explain that concept to a child? What are the implications of Jesus being preeminent in everything? How does “all the fullness of God” dwell in Jesus? What theological doctrines or practical implications flow from the reality that Jesus is fully divine?
Song: “Living Hope” by Brian Johnson & Phil Wickham
