False and True Religion (Luke 20:45-21:4) - 11/17/24

INTRO

  • Our Religion. Our Worship

  • Worship is an act of religious devotion usually directed towards a deity or god. (Wikipedia)

  • Worship – To pay homage to or, literally, to ascribe worth to some person or thing, hence, worship embraces the whole of the reverent life, including piety and liturgy. (Eerdmans Bible Dictionary)

  • Our heart. Our life. OUR WORSHIP

  • We have a great example of False and True Religions. SCRIBES AND WIDOW

The Scribes – v. 45-47

BEWARE Luke 11:14

  • Listen. Guard against

  • Look within. Check one’s heart.

The religious leadership of the day. Position of Influence. YET…

They were not ascribing worth to God, but themselves.

  • Long robes Numbers 15:38-40

  • Public greetings. Best seats.

  • Devour widows. Took advantage of them financially.

  • Long prayers Matthew 6:5-6

  • Pride, Greed, Self-Righteous

Their motive

  • Self. Success. Prestige.

  • Plans without God and His Kingdom as part of the equation.

Their spiritual condition

  • Hearts were hardened

  • Eyes were blind

John 12:37–40[37] Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, [38] so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” [39] Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,[40] “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.”

The Widow – vv. 21:1-4

Alone, dependent, insignificant in society. YET…

A picture of true devotion

  • Out of her poverty… everything (her all)

  • Sacrificial life

  • The Lord is the most important thing in her life. True devotion.

  • Her life revolves around him (rather than life around us)

Romans 12:1–21I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The What Now

  • Religion and Worship go together. Our heart our life.

  • When it comes to worship, the reason determines the actions. (Why…)

  • Our giving is so much than just our money… it is our time, talents, and treasures… ALL REPRESENT OUR WORSHIP.
