INTRO
Friday of Holy Week
The Roman trial. Pilate and Herod
Religious leaders seek Pilate to pronounce judgment (Sanhedrin are determined to get their way)
The Romans had the authority to condemn Christ.
Brought before Pilate
Pontius Pilate ruled over Judea
Governor of Judea AD 26 – 36 .Only Rome can condemn someone to death
The accusations
Jesus stirred up trouble
Not paying His taxes to Caesar
He claims to be King (THIS WAS THE ISSUE)
Hatred and envy
Sent to Herod
Herod Antipas (4 BC-AD 39)
Killed John the Baptist
Eager to see Jesus (see Him do a miracle)
Jesus does not do perform a miracle, but remains silent
He mocks and ridicules Christ
Sent back in robes
Renewed friendship with Pilate
Rejected by the people
Notice their response
They accused him. v. 2
They were urgent – v. 5
Vehemently accusing – v. 10
All cried out together, away with this man, and release to us Barabbas. – v. 18
Kept shouting, crucify him! – v. 21
Urgent, demanding with loud cries. – v. 23
THEIR VOICES PREVAILED – v. 23
Truths to Consider:
Twisting the truth is the enemy of the Gospel.
Following the pressures of the world will lead to denying Christ (who He is and what He came to do)
Expect persecution, but rest assured we are in the center of God’s redemptive plan.
Only the true children of God know who Jesus is. (By turning Jesus over to Pilate, they showed their heart.)
